The Menoptera and The Zarbi

The Menoptera look like a cross between giant butterflies and bees, these sensitive creatures because slaves of the Zarbi when the Animus invaded Vortis. Barbara destroyed the Animus with a cell destructor gun as it attempted to absorb the Doctor and Vicki. This let the Zarbi and the Menoptera to resume an existence in peace.

The Animus are crouched at the center of its web on Vortis and they controlled the minds of the Zarbi and of the Doctor's companions by means of ornaments made of gold.

The Optera are the small caterpillar-like creatures that inhabit the tunnels beneath Vortis. They are hostile towards intruders and they were encouraged by Ian and Vrestin (leader of the Menoptera invasion force) to burrow up to the surface of their planet and fight the Animus.

The Zarbi are insects that look like ants and they were possessed by the Animus. The Zarbi use Venom Grubs (a species of centipede that spit venom) as weapons.
