The Monk

The Monk (sometimes called the Meddling Monk) is the first character from  "the same place" as the Doctor and Susan do. He has a more advanced Tardis than the Doctor, leading the Doctor to estimate that the Monk left Gallifrey fifty years before him. Their first known meeting takes place as the Monk tries to help King Harold to defeat William the Conqueror in 1066 (The Time Meddler). The Monks motivation seems to be a misplaced sense of the way things should have been plus a desire to have "fun." After the Doctor strands the Monk in 1066, the Monk fixes his his Tardis and attempts revenge on the planet Tigus. The Monk follows the Doctor to ancient Egypt (The Daleks' Master Plan), where he is caught between the Doctor and the Daleks in the struggle for the possession of the Taranium core. The Doctor steals the Monk's directional control, which he puts to good use.

The Monk does not appear again in the series, but he appears in the New Adventure Novel, No Future.
