Doctor Who is a British science fiction program that started on Novenmber 1963 and run until 1989, but the phenomenon still carries on. Doctor Who mixed science fiction and historical drama in a variety of different styles that was enjoyed by adults and children.
Twenty six years and thirteen days after the first epidose, An Unearthly Child, was transmitted, the BBC aired the final episoe Survival, the last Doctor Who story. But this wasn't the end. The Doctor and his ship, the Tardis (which stands for Time and Relative Dimensions In Space), was still popular, with new books, novels, comics being released. Also, the first Doctor Who Video (Revenge of The Cybermen) was released. Then came a range of Doctor Who toys, including a talking Dalek and many action figures. In the nineties, Doctor Who was as popular as it had ever been before. The Doctor's adventures have been repeated on both terrestrial and satellite television. All over the world, Doctor Who has been seen at one time or another.

After 26 seasons, the Seventh Doctor and current companion Ace walked off into the sunset. Although Sylvester McCoy was expecting to play the Doctor for one more year before moving on, the decision was taken to ‘rest' the series.

Meanwhile, Hollywood producer Philip Segal, an ex-pat who had loved the show as a child, was working behind-the-scenes with the BBC and the American TV networks to get his own vision of Doctor Who off the ground.
