The Massacre of St Bartholomew's Eve
Written by: John Lucarotti 1st Aired: 5 Feb 66-26 Feb 66 Companions: Steven, DodoLocation: Paris, 1572 A.D. The Doctor and Steven arrive on a rubbish heap in 16th century Paris. Although the Doctor knows that this is a dangerous time and place, he decides to visit and apothecary named Preslin, whose name he once saw mentioned in a scientific extract. In his absence, Steven gets involved with-and agrees to help-the Huguenots. The Doctor does, too, after several Huguenots believe him to be the newly-arrived Abbot of ambrose, whom he closely resembles. They persuade him to impersonate the Abbot to gather information for them, and to free steven who has been captured by Catholics. Contravening the Laws of Time, the Doctor even causes an assassination attempt to fail. But a face-to-face confrontation between the Doctor and the Abbot himself leads to a further atrocity the Doctor knows he cannot prevent. A massacre of Huguenots is but a day away.
