With porters carrying the Tardis, the time travelers join the party as they go to Cathay. After attacks on the caravan and an unsuccessful attempt to kidnap Barbara, it becomes clear that this is no ordinary expedition. If the treachery of warlord Tegana doesn't prevent them from reaching the Emperor's court, will the Doctor be able to stop Marco Polo from presenting the Tardis as a gift to Kublai Khan? The fate of the Tardis crew-and of Cathay itself-may hinge on a backgammon game.
